NuFact
Announces Scoping Study for Future Neutrino FacilityA Scoping Study
for a future Neutrino Facility which would incorporate a Neutrino Factory and/or
a high intensity Neutrino Superbeam was launched on 26th June 2005 at NuFact05
(The 7th International Workshop on Neutrino Factories and Superbeams) held in
Frascati. The Scoping Study will build upon previous studies in the USA, Europe
and Japan. It will elaborate the physics case, define the baseline options for
such a facility and its neutrino detectors and identify the required research
and development programme to lay the foundations for a complete
design study proposal. Comparisons will be made with other options such as beta
beams.
The Scoping Study Leader is Peter Dornan (Imperial College London,
UK), and is organised into three working groups - Physics Working Group, led by
Yorikiyo Nagashima (Osaka University, Japan), Machine Working Group, led by
Michael Zisman (LBNL, USA), and Detector Working Group, led by Alain Blondel
(University of Geneva, Switzerland). The Scoping Study will run for a year and
produce a report for September 2006. The plan for the Scoping Study can be found
at

Any
institute or individual interested in future neutrino physics facilities is
encouraged to contribute and are asked to contact any of the
