International Linear Collider launches new
"Gateway to the Quantum Universe" report and website

The International Linear Collider community today released a new report, "The International Linear Collider – Gateway to the Quantum Universe" to mark the beginning of a new phase for the proposed particle accelerator. The document serves as a companion piece to the recently published Reference Design Report and highlights the scientific goals and technical challenges of the proposed machine. The report also has a companion website at www.linearcollider.org/gateway.

Intended for a general audience with an interest, but not necessarily a background in science, it translates the complicated technical details of the Reference Design Report into a visionary text. "As we commence the engineering design phase of the ILC, we require excellent communication tools to help explain the project’s science and technology goals in an engaging way," said Barry Barish, Director of the Global Design Effort, the organisation that manages the engineering efforts and R&D programme for the accelerator. "I am confident that the ‘Gateway to the Quantum Universe’ report will play an important role during this next phase and successfully convey the excitement of future potential scientific discoveries."

The ILC is a proposed particle accelerator that could answer some of mankind’s most fundamental questions. Consisting of two linear accelerators that face each other, the ILC will hurl some 10 billion electrons and their anti-particles, positrons, toward each other at nearly the speed of light. It will stretch approximately 31 kilometres in length. Inside the ILC, particles will collide 14,000 times every second at energies of 500 billion-electron-volts (GeV). The current baseline design allows for an upgrade to a 50-kilometre, 1 trillion-electron-volt (TeV) machine during the second stage of the project.

The report is written in a truly global fashion by ILC physicists and engineers from around the world, chaired by Philip Burrows from Oxford University. "Our hope is that readers can absorb the report in the time it takes to make a short journey by plane or train, aided by the many illustrations inside," Burrows said. "Now that the Reference Design Report is finished, the ILC needs to change gears. The next stage will require help from all of us who care about the future of particle physics."

In August 2007, the ILC community published the four-volume Reference Design Report, demonstrating the technical feasibility and defining the scientific goals and parameters for the planned 31-kilometre accelerator. The global project now enters an engineering design phase that will last until 2010. At the end of this phase, the ILC community will produce mature documented designs, more detailed costing and plans for the project that will pave the way for governmental decisions on funding and siting.
