A new partner joins SuperB from Russia
A major agreement was recently signed between the Nicola Cabibbo Laboratory Consortium (CLC) and the Budker Institute for Nuclear Physics (BINP) in Novosibirsk, Russia. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will enable the joint development of projects for the construction of a SuperB Factory (B particles factory) in Rome and a SuperC-Tau Factory (C and tau particles factory) in Novosibirsk.
This agreement is the climax of the historical scientific cooperation between Italy and Russia in the field of high energy physics, particle accelerators physics and applications based on synchrotron radiation production, in particular due to the involvement of the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) and the Budker Institute for Nuclear Physics in Novosibirsk (BINP).
The intensive production and study of tau leptons and of particles containing quarks "bottom" and "charm" will allow to explore new physics beyond the Standard Model, the present theory explaining the behaviour of particles and their interactions. The SuperB and SuperC-TAU accelerator projects were born to carry out a deeply detailed study of these very rare phenomena to find small unpredicted violations or symmetries in the behaviour of fundamental particles.
"During these last decades the development of new and effective electron-positron accelerators has shown an extremely high potential in the research on fundamental properties of matter. In this context, the SuperB and SuperC-Tau projects are perfectly synergistic both from the point of view of the technological research and of the scientific program - says Roberto Petronzio, Consortium Cabibbo Lab director general – This is the reason for the strong shared will to establish a long-term collaboration in the development of future accelerators and detectors for fundamental research. "
While the Budker Institute is ready to assist the Cabibbo Lab for the integration, assembly, alignment, testing and commissioning of accelerator systems, Cabibbo Lab, on the other hand, could provide SuperC-Tau with tools and technologies specifically developed for the SuperB accelerator. Together with the cooperation of the Novosibirsk State University and the Novosibirsk State Technical University, BINP gave its willingness to provide teaching and training for the Cabibbo Lab staff engaged in SuperB.
"The strong complementarities between the two scientific programs and their experimental setups allow to share the greatest part of the ideas needed for the development of the collider, the detector and other components - says Alexander Skrinsky, director of the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics - BINP, in particular, owns the experience, know-how and skills for the development, prototyping and testing of the magnets and the vacuum chambers for SuperB accelerator rings and linear accelerator."
The Nicola Cabibbo Laboratory Consortium (CLC) is the international center for fundamental and applied physics sponsored by the National Institute of Nuclear Physics and the University of Rome Tor Vergata. It is responsible for the implementation of the SuperB accelerator in an area of about 30 hectares the Rome Tor Vergata University Campus.
The Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics (BINP) is one of the major centers for fundamental physics in Russia. Located near the Siberian town Novosibirsk, the centre is devoted to high-energy physics and particle physics and hosts several research groups and facilities.
