I was born 2nd June 1964 in Huddersfield, an industrial mill town in the North of England. My grandfather, father, and brother are all plasterers--so you can say I broke the (Plaster of Paris--groan) mould.

I graduated with a Physics degree from the University of Manchester in 1985. I then commenced on my doctoral studies, also at Manchester, in experimental particle physics. My PhD work was on the Omega Photon experiment at CERN studying particle production in high-energy photon-proton collisions. I was awarded my doctorate in 1988. My first postdoctoral position was as a research associate at the University of Lancaster working on the H1 experiment at the HERA electron-proton accelerator at DESY, Hamburg. Two years later I switched experiments at HERA and joined the ZEUS experiment as a physicist-programmer at the University of Glasgow. In 1994, whilst at Glasgow, I also joined the LHCb experiment, an experiment to study rare decays of B-mesons and precise measurements of CP violation at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. In 1999 I moved to the University of Bristol as a lecturer, I remained on the ZEUS experiment and re-joined LHCb with a new group from Bristol. I am currently working at CERN as a paid associate, as the LHCb offline computing coordinator, and will return to Bristol in the summer of 2005.

Nick Brook familyI am married to Judy and have three children: Jenny (aged 15), Ryan (aged 14) and Jack (aged 9.) Judy has a degree in Public Health and works as a Health Visitor. Unfortunately though I am based in Geneva the family remain in the UK as Jenny is in her final year of High School. Judy and I enjoy hiking and appreciating good wine. I am an avid fan of rugby league (rugby treize) and support the Huddersfield Giants. Though I am sure Judy would say work was my hobby too! The lads both play soccer at local clubs, whilst Jenny is into gymnastics and hiking.

I was active in politics until work impinged. I stood for the United Kingdom Parliament in the 1997 general election as a Conservative candidate in the Airdrie and Shotts constituency in Scotland.
