I would make a good candidate because...
It's hiring season for physicists. In his latest round of interviewing,
Stephon Alexander ends up in the
hospital with the flu, but then recovers admirably to give several
lectures on quantum gravity and string theory.
Caolionn O'Connell emerges
"fairly unscathed" from her interviews in Boston. "The whole job
interview thing was not nearly as horrible as I was envisioning," she
writes.
Debbie Harris recalls
the challenges and disappointments of job-hunting for a two-physicist
couple.
Finally, Gordon Watts dispels the
notion that job-hunting is only difficult for the job candidates.
After much debate, his department has finally selected a top candidate,
but a lot of paperwork still stands between the selection and the actual
hiring. "There are an amazing # of people that have to line up and say
'yes,'" he writes. "All have to say 'yes' for it to work, but only one
need say 'no' for it not to work!" |

A picture is worth a thousand words
Frederic Deliot documents his voyage from Paris to Fermilab (near Chicago) in photos. Not even an airplane lunch can escape the click of Frederic's shutter.
Tommaso Dorigo is also at Fermilab, and this time he has brought his family. He posts photos of his young children making the most of their vacation in the Fermilab Village.
From across the pond, Peter Steinberg sends snapshots of snow-covered CERN, in Switzerland. He takes readers on a virtual tour of the laboratory, including a rare visit to the ATLAS experiment's underground "pit." |
