Reaching out
Caolionn O'Connell takes her blog
to Washington, where she is meeting with members of Congress to talk about
federal funding for basic science. "It is a tough time to ask for money
for basic science, but…if we don't start re-investing into the future of
the physical sciences, especially high-energy physics, the ramifications
to the future of the field and, eventually, to our society will be
severe," she writes.
Debbie Harris visits the
Chicago Academy for the Arts, a high school for the performing, visual,
and media arts. "One student asked if there were any poetic folks who were
physicists (to which the answer is most assuredly yes!). In two different
classes I got asked the question, 'Do you think doing physics changes the
way you look at the rest of your life?'"
Peter Steinberg posts a "public
service announcement" about black holes -- or, more correctly, the lack
thereof -- at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

The jet set
Several Quantum Diarists attended the Recontres de Moriond meeting in La Thuile, Italy. Attendees split their time between going to lectures and skiing in the Italian Alps. Frederic Deliot posts photos, Tommaso Dorigo reveals his enviable schedule, and Ursula Bassler offers
her evaluation of the conference.
John Ellis completes his crossing of South America by land from the Pacific to the Atlantic, talking to physicists and funding agencies along the way. |
