Pregnancy, parenthood, and a life in physics
Ursula Bassler reports that Sophie Trincaz-Duvoid gave birth to a baby boy, Arthur. "All four [family members] are well, happy and tired," writes Ursula.
Frederic Deliot announces that he and his wife are expecting their first child--a girl! "We had today our second scan. Obviously since we have learned this good news, I had time to realize in the same time as Chris' belly is getting round but still, what a magic to see the baby really moving!"
Debbie Harris, who has shared her struggles balancing family and physics in her blog, sees fiddler Natalie McMaster perform at Fermilab--seven and a half months pregnant! "But Natalie was out in full force and amazing form. I kept thinking 'this is what it is supposed to be like: you get pregnant, you are damn proud of it, and you stay just as proud of what the rest of your life is about, and the two just go together hand in hand.'"
Caolionn O'Connell considers what it might take to "merge a biological clock and a career trajectory without either being sacrificed." Getting the timing right is difficult, she notes. "Yes, I would actually feel genuinely guilty if I got pregnant while working. And I hate that the guilt is completely self-inflicted, since I have felt no external pressures in that regard."
"With all the new babies around, I get sometimes a little sad of not having children myself," writes Ursula Bassler. "It looks wonderful to get pregnant, have children, to participate in what will be the next generation, to love them and care for them and see them growing up...So, good luck and all my best wishes to the new parents!"
