About blogging
"You know you're in trouble when your mother-in-law is blogging," writes Gordon Watts. Well, by his own standards, he's in trouble. His wife and his brother-in-law have also jumped on the blogging bandwagon. His brother-in-law claims to have no plans for world domination, but--with four family members now sharing their every thought and action online--that claim may prove difficult to substantiate.

Peter Steinberg gets a ribbing about his blog from a colleague, who sends him a humor piece about the motivations of bloggers. Top of the list: "The world sure needs more of ME." Don't worry, Peter. We know you're doing it for physics.

Women supporting women in physics
Ursula Bassler explains the newest scandal in France about women in science. It involves no less than the Minister of Research. "Time to finish my film project about women in science," Ursula writes.

Caolionn O'Connell remembers how the support of women helped her through the first two years of graduate school. "One of the things that made my life bearable during that rough patch was Ladies' Night. A group of us in physics would get together, make dinner, drink a copious amount of wine, then vent, brag or just relax. Knowing I wasn't alone in my frustration made all the difference." Now she hopes to help other women make it through.

White Sox win!
At least a few Quantum Diarists were paying attention this week when the White Sox won the World Series for the first time since 1917. Rob Gardner, a University of Chicago physicist, photographed Chicago's transformed skyline. "It's nice to see the Sox get a little respect in their hometown," he writes.

Caolionn O'Connell would have been "completely unaffected" by the series, except that her boyfriend is a die-hard Houston Astros fan. During the experience, she learned several things not to do during a game, including "question his commitment to the Astros," "express pity about the White Sox," "touch the remote control," and "keep asking 'isn't it over yet.'"
