Brian Greene talks to Congress

The Revolution in 21st Century Particle Physics

Renowned physicist and author Brian Greene will address the Congressional Research and Development Caucus Advisory Committee at 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, in the Cannon Caucus Room, 345 Cannon, Washington, D.C. The event is hosted by House Science Committee members, Rep. Judy Biggert and Rep. Rush Holt. Greene’s talk is titled "Reaching for Einstein’s Dream: The Quest for the Deepest Laws of the Universe."

Einstein sought but never found a "unified theory" of the universe: a single, all-encompassing framework for explaining the cosmos. Today, scientists have picked up where Einstein left off and may well be closing in on the universe’s deepest laws. Impressive theoretical developments are much in need of experimental input, providing fertile ground for revolutionary breakthroughs in our understanding of the universe.

Greene, a professor of physics and mathematics at Columbia University, has published two popular books on physics: The Elegant Universe and The Fabric of the Cosmos. He is also the host of the PBS NOVA mini-series The Elegant Universe, which has attracted millions of viewers worldwide.

The Director of DOE's Office of Science, Raymond L. Orbach, will introduce Greene at the congressional event. The event is organized by the Department of Energy’s Office of Science/Office of High Energy Physics, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, and Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.

Dr Orbach will also present the new High Energy Physics Advisory Panel publication "Discovering the Quantum Universe," a companion volume to the "Quantum Universe." The new document explains the outstanding discovery opportunities at the Large Hadron Collider and the proposed International Linear Collider. Both publications will be available at the meeting and can be downloaded at:

The Congressional Research and Development Caucus Advisory Committee consist of public and private sector groups that inform Congress about research and development throughout the United States and the world. Previous caucus briefings have addressed fuel technology, nanomaterials, and internet security.
